The goal of this study is to examine the multi-modal effect of loving-kindness meditation (LKM) training on the motivational system evidenced by amygdala responding and behavioral tendencies to approach the world. We will also examine the extent to which LKM training can reduce levels of anxious and depressive symptomatology. We predict that LKM training will lead to better motivational equanimity evidenced in the following ways: 1) a weaker connection between trait-like maladaptive orientations towards the world (e.g., hypervigilance to negative stimuli) and amygdala activation during emotional responding, 2) an increase in approach behaviors to all experiences, and 3) lessened anxious and depressive symptomatology.
