Black emerging adults (ages 18–30) face high rates of racialized stress, depression, and substance use, yet often lack access to culturally relevant mental health resources. Contemplative Dialogues explores how culturally adapted yoga and mindfulness practices can support mental wellbeing, racial identity formation, and community belonging. We use Photovoice, a creative method where participants take photos and share stories about their experiences practicing yoga and mindfulness, to center participants’ own voices and perspectives while offering a richer, more authentic understanding of how contemplative practices impact daily life. The project has three goals: (1) to understand how culturally adapted yoga and mindfulness influence mental health, (2) to explore how these practices support cultural identity and community connection, and (3) to co-create knowledge with participants that can inform future mental health programs and services. By creating a safe, supportive space, this project allows participants to reflect on personal growth while fostering a sense of community. Findings will generate valuable insights for mental health professionals, yoga educators, and community leaders to shape programs and policies that enhance contemplative practices to be more accessible, relevant and effective for diverse communities. Ultimately, this work blends science, culture, and lived experience to address mental health disparities.
