Title: Advancement Intern
Dates: Academic Year, Summer
Schedule: 10hrs/week during the Academic Year; up to 20hrs/week over Summer
Compensation: $15/hour
Supervisor: Advancement Coordinator

Internship Overview:

The Mind & Life Institute operates as a nonprofit organization thanks to the charitable contributions of individuals and foundations at varying levels. Charitable contributions are the source of more than 90% of Mind & Life’s budget. The Advancement Intern would work with the Director of Advancement and Advancement Coordinator to support donor research, stewardship & cultivation, securing major gifts, corporate and foundation grants, individual giving, and planned giving. Interns may earn a stipend for their service.

Important/Critical Activities:
  • Maintaining a relational database (Salesforce) with accurate information about donors, donations, grant funding, and giving pipeline
  • Communicating with donors via phone, emails, and formal written correspondence to ensure timely and professional acknowledgement of giving activity and to confirm related information as needed
  • Researching opportunities and supporting the development of proposals for grants (foundation or corporate) and individual giving
Professional Development:

Advancement interns will have the opportunity to:

  • Gain experience on leading fundraising and Salesforce database
  • Become familiar with the world of philanthropy and general best practices in fundraising
  • Advance writing and communication skills
  • Gain experience working in a nonprofit setting and as a member of a small team
  • Form professional connections and take advantage of learning opportunities with dynamic Mind & Life staff and its global community of scholars, scientists and contemplatives
  • Explore contemplative practice for personal and professional development
Qualifications:
  • Technical proficiency using Mac OS, Google Apps, and Excel
  • Professional communication and conduct appropriate to emailing and speaking directly with donors
  • Close attention to detail and quality of large datasets
  • Desire to gain experience in nonprofit philanthropy
  • Preferred: Basic understanding of relational database design and functionality
  • Preferred: Some experience in administrative role
