While I wholeheartedly welcome this discussion I am a little anxious by how cogngitive this discussion is- no doubt to some extent this is necessary. But we know that the Amygdala only beds in new learnings when received in a trusting environment- hence the necesssity for re-learning to be in a good relationship with f.e. a therapist. We can't just'figure it'- it needs to be experienced- this seems to be constantly forgotten in this debate.

Dr Phelps has hit a key concept, "the amplification of attention on focal but not peripheral details of emotionally-charged experiences". As a long time student of Davidson, Ricard, Wallace's work in the domains of affective neuroscience, emotion-attention-cognition, the mind-body connection and Shamatha meditation modalities, it is heartening to see this work evolving in its "wholesome" approach as our East-Meets-West paradigm continues to emerge.

Thank you all for this invaluable work. Warmly,
Jeris JC Miller, Social Media Program Manager

"...whether or not it made sense really to separate out notions of “cognition” from “emotion.”...

I like to emphasize that. As that principle encounters me in several forms, i mean the principle that from a higher perspective/view these aspects of beings (existencial aspects of (human) beings) are altogether a homogenous "field".

I would be interested to know, in conjunction to the the action or intention of meditating on a single mantra (thereby using resources to attend to it) and result of which utilization of the capacities of emotion (i.e. happiness or the complex concept of gratitude) and how they in turn affect each other. Meditating on an emotional mantra and how that would affect brain pathways/beneficial cognitive development.

Radiant blessings,
